Sudanese army says it repelled major RSF attack near El-Obeid
Sudan’s army and allied forces have repelled an attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on two areas southwest of El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state, according to military sources.
The sources told Anadolu that government forces pushed back the RSF assault on Jabal Hashaba and Umm Arda on Friday morning, Anadolu Agency reported.
They claimed the RSF suffered casualties and lost military equipment during the fighting, but did not provide specific figures.
Members of the Sudanese army and allied Joint Forces also released videos they said showed their forces controlling Jabal Hashaba and Umm Arda after stopping the attack.
Neither the Sudanese army nor the RSF had issued an official statement on the clashes as of 9:15 GMT.
The reported fighting comes as violence continues to intensify across Sudan’s Kordofan and Darfur regions, as well as Blue Nile state.
The army said on Thursday that it had also repelled an RSF attack on Jabra al-Sheikh in North Kordofan, claiming that the paramilitary group suffered heavy losses.
The three states that make up the Kordofan region—North Kordofan, West Kordofan and South Kordofan—have remained major battlegrounds in the conflict between the army and the RSF.
Sudan has been at war since April 2023, when fighting erupted between the army and the RSF over disagreements surrounding the paramilitary group’s planned integration into the regular military.
The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and forced around 15 million others to flee their homes, according to UN data, local authorities and academic estimates.
The latest clashes underscore the continued volatility of the Kordofan region, where control of strategic areas remains contested as Sudan’s wider war enters its fourth year.
