Sudan, Eritrea leaders discuss strengthening ties in Asmara meeting

He said Afwerki received al-Burhan at Asmara International Airport, adding that their talks would focus on strengthening bilateral ties as well as regional and international issues of common interest.

The visit came around a month and a half after al-Burhan and Afwerki met in Asmara for talks on bilateral relations, developments in Sudan and regional and international issues.

Khartoum and Asmara have intensified contacts since the outbreak of war in Sudan. The two countries share a land border of more than 600 kilometers (373 miles), making their coordination particularly important for security and regional stability.

Since April 2023, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been locked in a war that has killed tens of thousands of people.

The latest figures from the UN refugee agency show that around 11.3 million people remained internally displaced in Sudan or had fled to other countries because of the conflict as of early August 2026.
