The story
Steven Pienaar has reflected on an important chapter in his coaching journey after recently parting ways with Sharjah FC following a successful spell in the United Arab Emirates.
Widely regarded as one of South Africa’s finest football exports, the former Everton and Borussia Dortmund midfielder spent the last three years leading Sharjah FC’s Under-17 side in a developmental programme linked to AFC Ajax’s renowned youth structures.
Now armed with a UEFA Pro Licence — the highest coaching qualification in European football — Pienaar took to Instagram to share an emotional farewell message, reflecting on both the professional and personal growth he experienced during his time in the Middle East.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to work with such great players, staff, and people around the club.
“A special thank you to my Ajax colleagues, especially Misha, Karim, and Reggie, for their constant support and guidance, and for being part of this journey with me. As this chapter comes to an end, I am excited to continue my path as a coach and look forward to the next step in my career,” noted Pienaar.

The 44-year-old has steadily built his coaching résumé since retiring from professional football, previously serving as head coach of Ajax’s Under-16 side.
His decorated playing career included spells with Cape Town Spurs, Tottenham Hotspur, Sunderland and the now-defunct Bidvest Wits, and he also became a key figure for Bafana Bafana during his international career.
“Schillo” concluded his message by thanking Sharjah FC and wishing the club success moving forward.
“Thank you once again to Sharjah FC, and I wish the club nothing but success in the future.”
Beyond football, Pienaar’s UAE chapter became a family journey shared with his wife, Awa Pienaar, and their daughters, who relocated with him during his time abroad.
Following his departure, Awa also paid tribute to her husband in a heartfelt social media message celebrating his resilience and dedication.
“I am so proud of you. Watching your strength and dedication inspires me every single day. No matter how life changes continuously, you keep on showing up for our family, and we appreciate that. Thank you for being our safe place, my partner and the heart of our home. May Allah bring you everything you desire and more, Inshallah.”
