With the Betway Premiership title race set to go down to the wire, indications are that Orlando Pirates could be without one of their attacking options for what is shaping up to be a decisive final-day encounter against Orbit College FC.

Pirates head into their last match of the season sitting second on the standings with 66 points, still mathematically in contention for the title as they attempt to catch leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who are on 68 points after completing their campaign.

However, the Buccaneers’ preparations appear to have been dealt a setback, with striker Yanela Mbuthuma believed to be doubtful for the clash after suffering a knee injury last weekend.

Mbuthuma sustained the injury during Pirates’ crucial Betway Premiership encounter against Durban City on Saturday, when he was forced off in the 38th minute after taking a knock to the knee.

The striker was visibly struggling as he limped off the field before being replaced by Evidence Makgopa in what was initially understood to be a precautionary substitution.

Although there has been no official confirmation regarding the extent of the injury, sources close to the situation have indicated that the forward remains a doubt ahead of the potentially season-defining fixture against Orbit College.

The timing of the setback could be a concern for coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, particularly with Pirates needing a victory to win the title.

All eyes will now be on whether the medical team can help the striker recover in time for the showdown, as Pirates prepare for a high-pressure finale in their pursuit of league glory.
