State Department report names Omar’s daughter in Cuba influence claim

WASHINGTON (MNTV) — A State Department report has drawn criticism for accusing left-leaning activists, organizations, and political groups of promoting narratives favorable to Cuba, naming among them Isra Hirsi — the daughter of Representative Ilhan Omar — alongside commentator Hasan Piker, Amazon labor organizer Christian Smalls, and the Democratic Socialists of America.

The report, “Cuba: The Capital of 21st Century Communism,” alleges Havana has cultivated ties with foreign activists, nonprofits, academic institutions, and cultural groups to build support abroad, citing US activists’ visits to Cuba as evidence and arguing that some American left-wing movements have adopted positions aligned with Havana’s interests.

It singled out the DSA, while conceding the alignment reflects shared ideology rather than Cuban control.

That concession undercuts the premise.

Traveling to a country, researching it, or holding a favorable view of its government is political expression, not coordination with a foreign power — and a government report that lists private citizens, including a congresswoman’s daughter, as nodes in a hostile influence network does something the First Amendment is meant to prevent: it uses state authority to mark domestic dissenters.

Civil liberties advocates warn that naming Americans this way stigmatizes lawful political activity regardless of whether any charge follows.

The report lands as the administration escalates pressure on Cuba through expanded economic measures.
