Yemen : UN Envoy Grundberg Voices Deep Concern Over Houthi Attacks on Mokha

Aden — Hans Grundberg, the United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen, expressed grave concern over recent Houthi attacks on the city and port of Mokha, warning that the escalation threatens civilians and risks reigniting large-scale conflict.

“I am deeply worried about the latest Ansar Allah attacks on Mokha, which reportedly caused civilian and military casualties and damaged infrastructure, including the port,” Grundberg said in a statement.

He noted that the strikes come amid the most intense escalation since the UN-brokered truce of 2022, sharply increasing the danger of a return to widespread war. 

Grundberg stressed that civilians in Mokha, Marib, and other areas face serious risks from the renewed violence, calling for an immediate halt to the escalation and protection of civilian infrastructure.

The envoy urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint and engage with his office to take concrete steps toward de-escalation. “This conflict can only be ended sustainably through an inclusive political process. Escalation pushes Yemen in the opposite direction,” he added.

The statement followed a pledge by Yemeni armed forces to respond to the large-scale Houthi assault on Mokha. 

Military officials confirmed that air defenses intercepted 11 drones during the attack, which killed four soldiers and three civilians and wounded 30 others, most of them civilians.
