Basseterre, St. Kitts, June 30, 2026 (National Assembly of Saint Christopher and Nevis) – Strengthening parliamentary diplomacy and reaffirming the enduring friendship between Saint Christopher and Nevis and the Republic of Cuba were the focus of a courtesy call between the Honourable Lanein Blanchette, Speaker of the National Assembly, and His Excellency Giuvel Orozco Ortega, Resident Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to the Federation. The meeting took place on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, in the National Assembly Chamber and underscored the shared commitment of both nations to deepening their longstanding bilateral partnership.
During the engagement, Speaker Blanchette extended congratulations to Ambassador Ortega on his appointment and conveyed her best wishes for a productive and successful diplomatic tenure. She also encouraged him to embrace the unique culture, hospitality, and opportunities the Federation has to offer. In reflecting on the relationship between the two countries, the Honourable Speaker observed that the partnership continues to be firmly grounded in mutual respect, adherence to democratic and parliamentary principles, and a longstanding tradition of cooperation.
Drawing on her own experiences, Speaker Blanchette highlighted Cuba’s invaluable contribution to the Federation’s national development through the provision of specialized educational opportunities for Kittitians and Nevisians, particularly in the field of medicine. For his part, Ambassador Ortega expressed appreciation for the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the structure and work of the National Assembly, while also learning about Speaker Blanchette’s distinguished service in public life. He spoke of the similarities and differences between the legislative systems of the two countries and reaffirmed Cuba’s commitment to advancing parliamentary diplomacy through regional and multilateral forums such as ParlAmericas.
