South-West derby headlines NPFL opener as Sporting Lagos, Ikorodu City set for historic Matchday 2 clash

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) may not kick off until the final weekend of August, but attention has already shifted to the opening round after the release of the 2026/27 fixtures, Soccernet.ng reports.

While defending champions Rangers International, Enyimba and Kano Pillars all face demanding opening-day games, one fixture has already captured the attention of fans.

Matchday 2 will witness the first-ever top-flight meeting between Lagos rivals Sporting Lagos and Ikorodu City, a landmark South-West derby that will to add another exciting chapter to the region’s growing football rivalry after Remo Stars got relegated to the NNL.

The two clubs have crossed paths, but never before in the NPFL, making the encounter one of the standout fixtures in the early stages of the new campaign. Before that, however, several heavyweight clashes headline the opening weekend.

2026/27 NPFL opening matchday fixtures

Defending champions Rangers International will begin their title defence at home against Katsina United, while former champions Enyimba travel to Minna for a tricky away clash against Niger Tornadoes.

Kwara United welcome four-time league winners Kano Pillars in one of Matchday One’s marquee fixtures, while Rivers United host Plateau United in Port Harcourt.

Elsewhere, Shooting Stars will entertain Inter Lagos in Ibadan as another South-West contest takes centre stage, while Sporting Lagos begin the new campaign away at Doma United. Newly promoted Ikorodu City will host Ranchers Bees in Lagos as they look to make another statement in the elite division.

The release of the fixtures has heightened anticipation ahead of the new season, with clubs expected to intensify preparations before the league gets underway between August 28 and 30.
