At least 23 people, including eleven children, were injured in an attack by stray dogs in Al Awadija, in Sudan’s Gezir state. The Ministry of Health announced the incident. Residents in several central and southern areas of the country, the Sudan Tribune reports, have reported an increase in the stray dog population, paralleled by escalating regional conflicts, declining sanitation, and a lack of veterinary checks. This situation is fueling fears of rabies transmission.
The injured, four of whom reported more serious conditions, were transferred to nearby hospitals and all received rabies vaccinations. Authorities have launched a campaign to control stray dogs, in consultation with the police, while—the newspaper reports—some residents reportedly killed four ownerless dogs.
