South Africa’s Junior Women Set for World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene
Athletics South Africa has named a 24-strong women’s contingent in its final national team for the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships, which take place at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, United States from Wednesday, 5 August to Sunday, 9 August 2026.
The final team, confirmed by the national federation on Thursday, 2 July 2026, sees South Africa’s leading junior women selected across the sprints, hurdles, middle distances, jumps, throws and relays as they prepare to take on the world’s best at the 21st edition of the biennial global showpiece.
African senior and under-20 pole vault champion Ansumé de Beer headlines the squad after a breakthrough season in which she rewrote the continental record books. The Boland Athletics vaulter cleared 4.30m to win senior continental gold at the African Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana on Thursday, 14 May 2026, lifting the African under-20 record she had earlier raised to 4.18m at the ASA Age Group Championships in Germiston in March. De Beer matched her 4.30m mark in Gräfelfing, Germany in June to underline her arrival among the world’s most exciting young vaulters.
Hurdler Megan Nieman also arrives in form, having broken her own national mark with a 56.64 run to claim the under-18 girls 400m hurdles title on the closing day of the ASA Age Group Championships in Germiston on Saturday, 28 March 2026.

The sprint and relay charge is led by Faith Konde, Rumé Burger and Sarah Reed over the short sprints, with Christi Loggenberg and Davida Strong covering the 400m and relay duty. Zoé Cilliers and Chrystabel Davis bolster the 4x100m relay, Isabella Gunter and Zanté van der Merwe complete the 4x400m unit, and Tumi Ramokgopa adds further hurdles and relay depth alongside Nieman.
In the middle distances, Carise van Rooyen will contest the 800m, while Lara Stander and Andrea Steynberg fly the flag over 1500m.
The field events group is among the strongest South Africa has assembled at this level, with Michaela Spocter in the high jump, Oluchi Abelwe Ndubueze and Ashlynn Norman in the long jump, Johanna Lamprecht and Fortune Cletus-Okolo in the shot put, Mila Ueckermann and Christé Loedolff in the discus, and Stephane Hook and Marine Grobler in the javelin, alongside De Beer in the pole vault.
Hayward Field, on the campus of the University of Oregon, is one of the sport’s most storied venues, having hosted the 2014 edition of these championships, then known as the IAAF World Junior Championships, before staging the 2022 World Athletics Championships. The Eugene meeting, branded Oregon 26 by World Athletics and local organisers TrackTown USA, runs over five days of morning and evening sessions.
The final champions will be crowned on Sunday, 9 August 2026, as South Africa’s junior women look to make their mark on the global stage.
