Souq al-Jumaa municipality condemns power cuts and load shedding

The Souq al-Jumaa municipality has strongly condemned continued power cuts, random load shedding and repeated breakdowns.

It called on the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) and relevant authorities to intervene urgently and introduce a fair and transparent load-shedding schedule that takes critical facilities into account.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the municipal council said it stood fully behind residents in their demand for reliable electricity as an essential service. It also criticised the deteriorating level of service and the continued hardship faced by local people.

The municipality called for an end to power cuts affecting critical facilities, including hospitals, dialysis centres and water stations. 

The municipality also stressed that the GECOL is an independent entity and is not administratively, technically or financially accountable to the Souq al-Jumaa municipal council. It said the council’s role was limited to its legal remit and that it had no authority to operate, disconnect or restore electricity supplies.

The council said it would continue taking legal and media measures to defend residents’ rights and seek solutions to the electricity crisis, rejecting continued outages and their impact on people’s lives and livelihoods.
