SNA Commander Visits Gorgor Special Forces Headquarters to Boost Operational Readiness

MOGADISHU — The Commander of the Somali National Army (SNA), Brigadier General Ibrahim Mohamed Mohamud, has visited the headquarters of the 1st Gorgor Commando Division, where he addressed officers and troops of the 21st Battalion.

During the visit, the Commander urged the troops to execute their national duties effectively, uphold military discipline and cohesion, and maintain readiness to ensure the successful fulfilment of their assigned responsibilities.

The Commander of the 1st Gorgor Division, Lieutenant Colonel Sahid Jama Farah Jarrare, warmly welcomed the SNA Commander and his delegation. During the visit, the Commander held a separate meeting with senior officers to discuss the general situation of the forces, strengthening operational effectiveness, and enhancing readiness and efficiency.

Focus on Logistics and Support

The visit also included the Commander of the SNA Support Command, Brigadier General Mohamed Mohamud Hassan (Garebey). The discussions focused on strengthening leadership, coordinating operations, and enhancing logistical support to ensure the fulfilment of national duties and the operational capability of the forces.

The Gorgor Commandos are among Somalia’s most specialised combat units and have played a prominent role in government-led military operations against Al-Shabaab. The 21st Battalion recently completed advanced military training in Manisa, Türkiye, focusing on combat skills, military discipline, unit cohesion, and operational readiness.

The Gorgor Commandos have been actively conducting clearance operations across the Middle Shabelle region as part of broader efforts to eliminate militant networks. Units from the 18th Brigade of the elite Gorgor Commandos carried out coordinated operations in Jowhar in April 2026, focusing on maintaining stability and preventing activities linked to extremist elements.

The TURKSOM Military Academy, established through defence cooperation between Somalia and Turkey, has become a cornerstone of the country’s security sector reform. Graduates of the academy, including elite units such as the Gorgor commandos, have been deployed across frontlines in HirShabelle, Galmudug, and Jubbaland.

The Gorgor Battalion has become one of Somalia’s most respected fighting units, known for its discipline, mobility, and front-line engagement against militant groups. Turkey has been a central partner in revamping Somalia’s military infrastructure, training thousands of soldiers and equipping units deployed across key regions.

Critical Note

The SNA Commander’s visit to the Gorgor headquarters reflects the ongoing focus on strengthening Somalia’s elite military units, which have been central to the government’s counterterrorism strategy. The Gorgor commandos, along with the Danab special forces, represent the most capable elements of the Somali National Army and have been instrumental in recent operations against Al-Shabaab.

Nevertheless, the effectiveness of these units depends on sustained support, including logistics, training, and integration with broader SNA structures. The Commander’s emphasis on discipline and readiness suggests that while capabilities are improving, challenges remain in maintaining standards and ensuring that the forces are prepared for sustained operations. The presence of the Support Command Commander indicates recognition of the logistical gaps that have historically hindered SNA operations, but translating these visits into tangible improvements in supply chains and equipment availability remains the real test.

For the Gorgor forces, maintaining their elite status and operational effectiveness will require continued investment and institutional support. The government must ensure that these units are adequately resourced and that their successes are not undermined by gaps in logistics or support.
