Shakira backs $1.25 million effort to rebuild schools after Colombia earthquake

The initial $1.25 million package brings together the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, Live Nation and CAF – Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean, with rebuilding efforts to be led by Shakira’s Fundación Pies Descalzos in coordination with local authorities.

“Schools are more than buildings. They give children the stability and routine they need most after a disaster,” Shakira said.

“Chocó is not alone. Colombia is not alone. And we will keep going.”

The earthquake caused widespread destruction, with 40 schools completely collapsing in Chocó and thousands of educational facilities affected across Colombia.

Shakira also announced that she will personally focus on helping rebuild the Universidad Tecnológica del Chocó Diego Luis Córdoba, the region’s main public higher education institution and a university attended by many former students of her foundation.

Philanthropist Howard Buffett joined Shakira during the visit and announced additional support through his foundation for the reconstruction of schools in the region.

Shakira, whose Fundación Pies Descalzos has worked in Chocó for more than two decades, is also calling on governments and international partners to contribute to the recovery effort.

“These past few days, I’ve watched my country suffer, but I’ve also watched people come together with the resilience and solidarity that has always defined us,” she said.
