One of the last visible reminders of Vancouver’s FIFA World Cup celebrations is set to disappear this week.
Science World announced that the soccer ball panels covering its iconic geodesic dome will begin coming down on Tuesday.
The dome was transformed into a giant soccer ball as part of the festivities surrounding the FIFA World Cup, becoming a recognizable feature of Vancouver’s waterfront skyline.
Deinstallation work is scheduled to begin early Tuesday morning, starting on the east side of the building facing Terminal Avenue. The removal process is expected to take between two and three weeks to complete.
While the soccer ball design will soon be gone, Science World has suggested the panels may have a future use.
“Wondering what will happen to the panels once they come down? You’ll have to stay tuned for our announcement,” Science World said in a Facebook post.
For now, Vancouver residents have one last chance to catch a glimpse of the World Cup-themed landmark before it returns to its familiar appearance.
