‘Safety Not Negotiable’ – SAFPU Responds To…

The South African Football Players Union has issued a strongly worded statement condemning the incidents that unfolded ahead of the recent Soweto derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, warning that player safety was seriously compromised.

In a statement released this week, SAFPU described the pre-match scenes as “regrettable and unacceptable,” stressing that such incidents not only tarnish the image of South African football but also place players at risk.

“The South African Football Players Union notes with grave concern the events that unfolded prior to the recent Soweto derby,” the statement read.

“Incidents of this nature are not only embarrassing to the image of South African football, but they also risk compromising the safety and well-being of players.”

The Union emphasised that football holds a significant place in society, representing unity, discipline and shared pride.

However, SAFPU warned that disorder and confrontation during high-profile fixtures undermine the integrity of the sport and erode public confidence in those responsible for managing it.

Calling for decisive action, SAFPU urged authorities to go beyond reflection and ensure accountability.

The Union has demanded a full, transparent, and credible investigation into the incident, insisting that any individuals found responsible must face consequences “without fear or favour.”

Furthermore, SAFPU highlighted the need for all stakeholders – including clubs, match officials, security personnel, and governing bodies – to treat the incident as a turning point. The Union stressed that safeguarding players must remain a non-negotiable priority.

“The safety of players is not negotiable; it is foundational,” the statement continued, reinforcing the organisation’s stance on protecting its members.

SAFPU also reiterated the significance of the Soweto derby as one of the most iconic fixtures in African football, warning that its legacy must not be diminished by avoidable disorder.

Concluding the statement, the Union reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rights, safety, and dignity of players, adding that it will continue engaging with relevant authorities to ensure higher standards are upheld going forward.
