Pyramids FC assistant coach Mohamed Nagy Ismail Afash, better known as Gedo, has revealed why the Egyptian club decided to appoint Rulani Mokwena as their new head coach.

The New Cairo-based outfit confirmed the South African’s appointment over the weekend following his departure from Libyan side Al Ittihad Tripoli earlier this year.

Continental Experience Key

Having previously coached in South Africa, Morocco, Algeria and Libya, the former Mamelodi Sundowns tactician arrives at Pyramids with extensive experience of African and North African football.

According to Gedo, that experience played a significant role in the club’s decision to appoint the 39-year-old.

“Mokwena was chosen because of his extensive experience in the Arab and African region,” the assistant coach said, per Kora Plus.

“He has been training with the team for two days, and I wish him great success in the coming period. He has great ambition and is very familiar with Egyptian clubs.”

Players Already Buying Into Mokwena

Gedo also revealed that Mokwena has already settled in well, with the squad quickly adapting to the new coach’s methods.

“There is great integration of the players with Mokwena, and I hope that we can deliver a great season in all competitions like in previous years.”

‘We Only Look At Ourselves’

Despite rivals Al Ahly strengthening their squad ahead of the new campaign, Gedo insisted Pyramids remain focused on their own ambitions.

“Not at all, on the contrary, we only look at ourselves, and I think we don’t need many signings.

“We have good players, none of whom have left except for [Fiston] Mayele, but the rest of the team is continuing and they are the ones who achieved the previous accomplishments, and God willing, we can achieve our ambitions in the new season.”
