Rising flour prices raise concerns over bread costs

Flour prices in Libya have recorded a new increase, with the price of a 100-kilogram sack rising to LYD 350, according to Ali Abu Azza, head of the Supreme Follow-up Committee at the General Syndicate of Bakeries.

Abu Azza said that the current price represents an increase of LYD 75 compared with July, when a 100-kilogram sack sold for LYD 275, warning that prices could rise further due to insufficient flour supplies in the market and the ongoing electricity crisis.

He said the shortage and power outages have affected bakeries’ production capacity and driven up operating and production costs, warning that continued increases in flour prices could eventually push up the price of bread.

Flour prices have risen steadily this year, from around LYD 190 per 100-kilogram sack in January to LYD 275 in July and LYD 350 currently.
