Putin Says Russia and Ukraine Could Still Reach a Peace Deal | Ukraine news

A familiar message from Moscow mixes an apparent opening with a harder position on the war’s future and Russia’s military plans.

Путін сказав, що «є шанс» на мирне врегулювання війни в Україні

Vladimir Putin said that a peaceful settlement to the war against Ukraine, which Russia launched more than ten years ago, may be possible. He made the statement during a plenary session of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok.

This is reported by the BBC Russian Service.

First and foremost, Russia and Ukraine must reach an agreement between themselves. Other countries, including the United States and China, are ready to support and assist them. Is there a chance for a peaceful settlement? In my view, yes.

At the same time, the Russian leader had previously said that Moscow intends to continue pursuing its stated objectives. Among them, he cited the complete capture of Ukraine’s Donbas.

Contacts Between Russia and Ukraine

According to Putin, communication between Moscow and Kyiv is being maintained, including through special services. However, he questioned whether such channels could bring a peaceful settlement closer, referring to the Ukrainian side’s latest statements.

Putin also said that Russia is not currently preparing a new wave of mobilization. He called reports that it could take place after the State Duma elections an information operation allegedly intended to influence the results of the vote.

There is currently no scenario that would require mobilization. This is a planned information operation by the enemy ahead of the State Duma elections.

Thus, Putin simultaneously said that peace talks may be possible and dismissed speculation about a new mobilization in Russia.
