The Cairo giants head into the decisive encounter reeling from a painful defeat on penalties to Algeria’s USMA in the second leg of the Confederation Cup final at the same venue on Saturday.
The shock loss has piled pressure on Zamalek to clinch the league title, not only for the silverware but also to salvage their season.
On paper, Zamalek’s campaign has exceeded expectations given the numerous difficulties the club has faced throughout the season.
However, their positive results would count for little if they fail to convert them into trophies.
The White Knights therefore have little choice but to secure the title, which would offer some consolation to supporters still hurting from the continental disappointment.
Yet Zamalek’s task will be far from being easy.
The players appeared mentally drained following the defeat to USMA, while physical fatigue was also evident, particularly in the second half of the final when the visitors created several chances but lacked the quality to capitalize.
The defeat also came at a cost, with several players suffering injuries that have left their availability in doubt.
Coach Moatamed Gamal, who has come under increasing pressure, is expected to field an improvised lineup due to limited options in his squad.
Gamal must also find solutions for the possible absences of defenders Mahmoud “El-Wensh” Hamdi and Mohamed Ismail.
Goalkeeper El-Mahdi Soliman, who failed to complete the Confederation Cup final, is likely to miss Wednesday’s match, with Mohamed Awad set to replace him.
However, Gamal will welcome back Moroccan fullback Mahmoud Bentayg, who missed the continental final through suspension.
Ceramica Cleopatra’s quality is another factor that could complicate Zamalek’s mission.
The side boasts several talented players, including Moroccan midfielder Ahmed Belhadj, playmaker Ghanem Mohamed, top scorer Sodiq Awujoola, who has netted seven league goals, and experienced South African striker Fagrie Lakay.
Ceramica have also shown strong organization under their highly rated coach Ali Masher, who will oversee the match from the stands due to suspension.
The match will be officiated by German referee Sascha Stegemann after Zamalek requested that the Egyptian Football Association appoint a foreign referee for the crucial fixture.
Zamalek have historically enjoyed the upper hand against Ceramica Cleopatra, winning 11 meetings and drawing two, with their only defeat coming in the Egypt Cup this season.
But past results will matter little on Wednesday, with the title race set to be decided over the final 90 minutes.
