The Red Devils missed out on the CAF Champions League for the first time in 23 years after they finished third in the Egyptian Premier League, with Zamalek claiming their first title since 2022, with Pyramids finishing runners-up.
Zamalek’s participation next season remains uncertain as the club currently has 10 outstanding registration bans with FIFA for a total of 18 cases, which means they are barred from obtaining the license to compete in continental competitions, according to GOAL.
Member of the Egyptian Clubs Association, Tharwat Suweilam, revealed that Egyptian FA president, Hany Abu Rida, would leverage contracts to ensure that the White Knights will be part of the Champions League next season.
Legal expert Ralph Charbel explained Zamalek’s situation and whether or not Al Ahly have a chance to replace them.
Charbel said Zamalek have until 31 May to settle all outstanding debts, or at least present a formal repayment plan.
Despite Rida’s comments that he could resolve the crisis, Charbel explained that the only solution was to settle any debts or reach a binding agreement.
Due to the uncertainty surrounding Zamalek, Charbel revealed that Al Ahly could apply to replace the White Knights, and stated that, as the next best-placed side in the league, it is only fair to consider them.
“Yes, it is only fair that the team in the next qualifying position steps in, provided it satisfies all requirements,” he said.

“If no club in a particular federation meets the requirements, then that country will not be represented in the tournament—as happened in the 2024–2025 season when no Gambian club competed in CAF competitions,” he added.
