PowerChina Expands Egypt Renewable Energy Projects with 1.8 GW Wind and Storage Manufacturing – News and Statistics

Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina) is advancing a portfolio of wind power projects in Egypt with a combined capacity exceeding 1.8 gigawatts, while also expanding into energy storage infrastructure and local manufacturing. This effort supports Egypt’s push to increase renewable energy capacity and accelerate its energy transition, according to a report from TradeArabia News Service.

As China and Egypt mark 70 years of diplomatic relations, green development has become a key area of practical cooperation. PowerChina’s wind portfolio includes the operational 500-megawatt Amunet Gulf of Suez Wind Project and two under-construction projects: the 1.1-gigawatt Gulf of Suez Wind Project and the 202.5-megawatt Ras Ghareb Wind Project.

During construction of the Amunet wind farm, challenges included temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, strong winds, sand erosion, and complex geological conditions. PowerChina addressed these by optimizing concrete temperature control, scheduling concrete pouring outside the hottest daytime hours, and monitoring wind speeds during turbine installation. The Amunet project achieved its acceptance certificate earlier than contractually required and received the 2025 RoSPA Health and Safety Award.

Building on its global project delivery experience and local capabilities, PowerChina is expanding its work in Egypt to include energy storage and local manufacturing projects. Local contractor Elalamya General Contracting has worked closely with PowerChina since being engaged as a civil works subcontractor for the Amunet project in 2023, with the partnership later extending to the other two wind projects. The head of Elalamya spoke positively about the partnership and the friendship developed, expressing interest in continuing the collaboration.

Last month, PowerChina began work on Sungrow’s new energy storage manufacturing facility in Ain Sokhna, covering a 50,000-square-meter site. The facility is expected to support local manufacturing and talent development, contribute to Egypt’s clean energy supply chain, and become Sungrow’s first battery energy storage system manufacturing base in the Middle East and Africa.

Since entering Egypt in 2012, PowerChina has created more than 2,000 direct jobs and over 10,000 indirect jobs through its projects. The company has trained more than 350 professionals in traditional and renewable energy roles, including quality control, health, safety and environment, social management, materials management, and logistics. PowerChina also works with dozens of Egyptian suppliers, subcontractors, and consultants in areas such as engineering services, construction materials, labor supply, subcontracting, and legal and tax consultancy.
