Pope Leo XIV Appoints New Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda, Bishop for Equatorial Guinea’s Bata Diocese

The graduate in Canon Law who speaks French, English, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See on 1 July 2001.

Since then, Archbishop Grysa served in various Apostolic Nunciatures, including the Russian Federation, India, Belgium, Mexico, Brazil, Israel and Palestine. 

Besides representing the Holy Father in Madagascar, he was also appointed Apostolic Delegate to Comoros and La Réunion on 27 September 2022. Subsequently he was also appointed Apostolic Nuncio to the Seychelles on 9 February 2023 and then to the Republic of Mauritius on 21 March 2023.

The Nunciature was established initially as Apostolic Delegation to Eastern Africa on 2 September 1966, before its elevation to the Apostolic Nunciature of Uganda.

In Equatorial Guinea, Bishop Nguema is to shepherd the people of God in Bata Diocese, which became vacant in December 2024, following the retirement of Bishop Juan Matogo Oyan.

Born on 13 July 1969 in Bata, Bishop Nguema joined the SDB in 1992 and made his perpetual profession in July 1998. He was ordained a Priest in July 2000.

Before his Episcopal appointment, he served in various pastoral and administrative roles, including responsibilities within Salesian communities in Congo and Cameroon, and studies in Rome at the Salesian Pontifical University.

Following his appointment by Pope Francis on 1 April 2017, he received Episcopal Consecration on 20 May 2017, during a celebration presided over by Cardinal Fernando Filoni, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.

His installation as Bishop of Ebebiyín took place on 24 May 2017, marking the beginning of his pastoral leadership of the diocese, which is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Malabo.

Since his appointment, Bishop Nguema Bee has also served as Vice President of the Episcopal Conference of Equatorial Guinea (CEGE).
