PM calls for stronger energy cooperation with Libya, activation of joint committee

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly on Thursday July 30, 2026 stressed the importance of strengthening bilateral relations between Egypt and Libya and advancing cooperation in line with the historical ties between the two countries, while emphasizing the need to activate the Egyptian-Libyan Joint Committee.

Madbouly made the remarks during a meeting in New Alamein with Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, Head of Libya’s Government of National Unity, following talks earlier in the day between President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and the Libyan delegation.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty, Electricity Minister Mahmoud Esmat, Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawi, and senior Libyan officials, including National Security Adviser Ibrahim Dbeibeh and National Oil Corporation Chairman Massoud Suleman.

Madbouly said that President Sisi had reaffirmed during his meeting with Dbeibeh the depth of the fraternal ties between the two countries and Egypt’s commitment to enhancing cooperation in a way that serves their mutual interests.

The Prime Minister said Egypt is looking to expand cooperation with Libya in the energy sector, particularly in natural gas, petroleum refining and electricity interconnection, stressing the importance of launching practical coordination between the relevant executive authorities in both countries.

He also highlighted Egypt’s efforts to strengthen electricity interconnection with neighboring countries, particularly Saudi Arabia and Libya, describing such projects as an important step toward boosting energy exchange among Arab states.

Madbouly added that the two countries also have significant opportunities for cooperation in fertilizer production.

He called for setting a clear timetable for bilateral cooperation in natural gas development, oil and gas exploration, and electricity interconnection.
