Orlando Pirates are three goals away from smashing their scoring record in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) 16-team era.

The Buccaneers need only three goals to finally improve their record in the 30-game PSL.

The 16-team league was established ahead of the 2002/03 season.

During the 2004/05 campaign, Pirates banged in 52 goals in 30 games to set a club record but still finished the season second behind champions Chiefs.

This season, Pirates have been on a fantastic scoring run, boasting 50 goals in 25 games. Should Pirates manage three goals in Sunday’s Soweto derby against rivals Kaizer Chiefs, they would beat their club record.

However, Pirates’ former striker Andries Sebola tells Soccer Laduma that his former employers would struggle to get three goals against resurgent Chiefs.

“This time, even though Pirates can win the game, they can’t score more than three. If they win, it’s going to be 2-1 or 1-0, but probably a 1-1 draw. That would be their score line. But more than three goals, I don’t see them scoring that,” insisted Sebola.

“But I must say I’m very impressed with the way Pirates score goals these days, even though I’m disappointed with the strikers.

“We cannot have top goal scorers who are midfielders. So, we need to find somebody who can bury the goals for them next season. I still say loaning out (Tshegofatso) Mabasa was a very disappointing thing,” he added.

Pirates’s league top scorers are Relebohile Mofokeng and Oswin Appollis, with 10 and eight goals respectively.
