Overcrowded Mbuya Nehanda Ferry Capsizes on Zimbabwe’s Lake Kariba, Killing At Least 15: 13 outlets compared

The vessel overturned Tuesday while travelling between the northern town of Kariba and nearby islands and fishing camps, with 114 adult passengers and 5 crew members aboard despite a capacity of 90 people.

Zimbabwe’s civil protection unit said 77 passengers were rescued and reached a small island on the lake, while search operations continued for those still missing.

Police said the ferry “with 90 people and five crew members has capsized in Lake Kariba“, and a witness told AFP that a wave may have hit the boat and caused its engines to switch off.

The search effort included a helicopter provided by Matusado National Park, alongside bigger boats and divers from the local area and the army.

Witness Maxton Kanhema told AFP that when people were in the water, “you could see a distress sign and then boats that were close by responded,” describing a response that followed the emergency signal.

Kanhema said the rescue was delayed by bad weather, adding, “due to the bad weather, the responses were a bit late,” as he described bodies in the water and a “sad situation to witness.”

The AFP account also said Kanhema expected the bodies of those who died to be taken to Kariba for identification, while police said more details would be released “in due course“.

In parallel, the Daily Jagran said the Civil Protection Unit reported 77 people had been rescued and reached a small island, with an underwater search and rescue team deployed to assist.

As the search continued, authorities warned that the actual number could be higher because an unknown number of children below ticketing age may also have been travelling on the boat.
