Ashley Du Preez has completed his permanent return to Stellenbosch FC and been handed the club’s iconic No. 10 jersey for the 2026-27 season.

As previously reported, the 29-year-old formed part of the package that secured Langelihle Phili’s blockbuster move to Kaizer Chiefs, alongside Given Msimango and a cash payment.

Du Preez spent four years at Naturena but struggled for consistency last term, making just 12 appearances without a goal.

Stellenbosch have now confirmed the Idas Valley-born forward has signed a long-term contract, marking an emotional homecoming for a player who started his professional career with the Maroons a decade ago.

“I always knew that I would come back to Stellenbosch,” Du Preez said.

“It’s great to be back where I grew up and at the Club where it all started for me. The community knows me well and has supported me since the start of my professional career, so being a local player and representing the Club again is a huge honour and privilege for me.”

The sentiment runs deeper than a simple change of employers. 10 years ago this month, Du Preez featured in Stellenbosch’s first-ever National First Division match when he came on as a substitute against Mthatha Bucks.

Coming back home

He went on to make 98 appearances across six years before joining Chiefs ahead of the 2022-23 season.

Stellenbosch CEO Rob Benadie described Du Preez as an exceptional footballer who has consistently proven his quality in the Betway Premiership, adding that the club believe he will add enormous value both on and off the field.

The move mirrors Iqraam Rayners’ successful return to the club after a difficult spell at SuperSport United. Rayners rebuilt his reputation through consistent performances before earning a move to Mamelodi Sundowns, a path Du Preez will hope to replicate.

Du Preez could make his second Stellenbosch debut when the Maroons face Polokwane City in the Betway Premiership on 11 August.
