Nigeria Takes Helm of UN Budget Committee, Jimoh Pledges Accountability and Efficiency

Nigeria has officially assumed the chairmanship of the United Nations General Assembly’s Fifth Committee, placing the country at the centre of deliberations on the UN’s budget, financial governance and administrative affairs.

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, said the country would use the position to push for greater transparency, accountability and far-reaching administrative reforms.

Ibrahim stressed that Nigeria’s leadership would not be “business as usual,” insisting that every dollar spent by the United Nations must be properly accounted for and justified, with resources delivering tangible benefits to the Organisation’s 193 Member States.

Under Nigeria’s chairmanship, the Fifth Committee will oversee discussions covering the UN’s budgets, human resources, institutional efficiency, oversight and the resources required to implement mandates approved by Member States.

The Nigerian envoy also highlighted the diplomatic significance of the role for Nigeria and Africa, particularly at a time when the United Nations faces financial pressures and growing demands for institutional reform.
