Nigeria Denies Backing Failed Niger Coup

The Federal Government has rejected claims circulating on social media alleging that Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) supported the recent failed coup attempt in Niger Republic.

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sola Enikanolaiye, described the allegations as baseless, irresponsible and an attempt to mislead the public and damage Nigeria’s reputation.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the minister maintained that Nigeria had never backed, and would not back, military coups or any other form of unconstitutional change of government.

He said Nigeria remained committed to democracy, constitutional governance and stability across West Africa, the Sahel and the African continent.

Enikanolaiye noted that the Federal Government had previously stated its position on the situation in Niger in a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on August 30, 2026.

According to him, Nigeria had expressed serious concern over the developments in Niger while advocating a peaceful, inclusive and participatory process for restoring stability and constitutional order in the neighbouring country.
