Nigeria’s women’s beach volleyball team began their campaign at the African Beach Volleyball Championship on a winning note after defeating Lesotho 2-0 in Alexandria, Egypt.
The Nigerians produced a dominant display at Abu Heif Beach, taking the opening set comfortably at 21-8 before overcoming a stronger challenge from Lesotho in the second set, which they won 21-18 to seal victory in straight sets.
The continental championship, which runs until August 22, features 45 teams from 28 African countries, comprising 24 men’s and 21 women’s teams.
The tournament serves as a qualifier for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, with the men’s and women’s champions earning direct qualification for the Olympics.
The competition is being held under the patronage of Alexandria Governor Engineer Ayman Atiya, with Aida Ismail, a member of the African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) Board, serving as chairperson of the Supreme Organising Committee.
CAVB President Bouchra Hajij is also attending the matches, monitoring proceedings and overseeing the smooth running of the championship.
Nigeria’s opening victory provides an encouraging start as the team targets a strong finish and a possible route to the 2028 Olympic Games.
Alexandria’s hosting of the championship further underlines Egypt’s growing role as a major destination for continental and international sporting events.
