Niger Signs $1.9 Billion Oil Refinery Deal & Drilling Begins at Kafra Oil Well

Niger is expanding its oil and gas infrastructure to become a petroleum powerhouse in West Africa. Niamey has signed a $1.9 billion deal with a Canadian firm called the Zimar Group, to build a 100,000-barrel-per-day oil refinery in the city of Dosso. Meanwhile, drilling has commenced at the Kafra oil well in northern Niger. Drilling at Kafra is being done by Algeria’s state-owned oil company, Sonatrach. Algiers is also deepening energy ties with Niamey, and Niger’s state-owned oil and gas firm, SONIDEP.
