NFF Orders League Boards to Step Aside

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has directed the leadership of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Nigeria National League (NNL), Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), and Nationwide League One (NLO) to hand over administrative control to their respective Chief Operating Officers.

The directive comes amid a sweeping restructuring of Nigerian football following the resignation of the NFF President, General Secretary, and members of the Executive Committee.

The development is particularly significant as it comes just days before the start of the 2026/27 NPFL season, which is scheduled to kick off on Friday, August 28, 2026.

The new campaign will begin with a South-West derby between Shooting Stars and newly promoted Inter Lagos at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan.

The season also marks a major commercial milestone for the league, following the announcement of a new three-year title sponsorship agreement with Euromatch, valued at approximately $7.5 million.

Under the deal, the competition is expected to receive about $2.5 million annually, with a significant portion allocated directly to clubs to improve player welfare and league operations.

The Euromatch partnership ends nearly a decade-long wait for a major title sponsor in Nigeria’s top-flight league and is widely seen as a step towards improving the financial stability and global visibility of domestic football.

However, the latest directive from the NFF introduces fresh uncertainty into the system, as league administrators are now required to step aside and hand over to operational leadership at a critical moment.

The move is expected to ensure continuity in league activities while broader reforms are being implemented, but it also raises questions about the timing and potential impact on the smooth running of the new season.

With kickoff imminent and structural changes underway, Nigerian football enters a new phase marked by both renewed investment and administrative uncertainty.
