Lesotho advances National AI Strategy and Data Centre Blueprint
Lesotho is developing a National Artificial Intelligence Strategy and Data Centre Blueprint after finalising its AI Policy in August 2026. The process builds on work started in 2025 and places increasing emphasis on implementation, infrastructure and capacity.
Lesotho has begun developing a National Artificial Intelligence Strategy and Data Centre Blueprint, following a five-day workshop held in Maseru from 17 to 21 August 2026 by the Ministry of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation and the United Nations in Lesotho.
The strategy builds on earlier work on Lesotho’s AI governance framework. The government had previously developed and validated an Artificial Intelligence Policy and an accompanying implementation plan. While the policy sets the broader direction for responsible AI adoption, the new strategy is intended to translate those priorities into more practical actions.
On 17 August 2026, the government published the final Artificial Intelligence Policy, the same day the workshop on the National AI Strategy and Data Centre Blueprint began. By 21 August, discussions had moved to implementation priorities, partnerships and a roadmap for the proposed data centre.
Why does it matter?
Lesotho is taking a layered approach to AI governance by developing an AI policy, an implementation plan and a national strategy, rather than relying on a single framework. This suggests a deliberate effort to move from setting AI principles to working out how they will be implemented in practice.
