Nearly Half Of U.S. Voters Favor Democrats For Control Of House, QPoll Shows

HAMDEN, CT — U.S. voters give the Democratic Party an 11-point advantage over the Republican Party for who they would want to see win control of the United States House of Representatives, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll among registered voters released Thursday.

The midterm elections are scheduled for Nov. 3.

If the election were today, 49% of voters would want to see the Democratic Party win control of the U.S. House, while 38% would want to see the Republican Party win control, with 13% not offering an opinion, according to the poll results.

The numbers are fairly similar to an earlier QPoll from July, when 48% of voters wanted to see the Democratic Party win control of the House, 41% wanted to see the Republican Party win control of the House, and 11% did not offer an opinion.

Here are some other takeaways from this week’s QPoll:

21% of voters approve of the way the Democrats in Congress are handling their job, while 70 percent disapprove.
26% of voters approve of the way the Republicans in Congress are handling their job, while 67 percent disapprove.
33% of voters approve of the way Donald Trump is handling his job as president, while 59% disapprove, with 8% not offering an opinion.
56% of voters think President Trump is too tough on Canada, while 28% think his attitude toward Canada is about right, and 7% think he is not tough enough on Canada. Ten percent did not offer an opinion.
70% of voters oppose President Trump’s executive order renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America, while 21% support the order.
60% of voters oppose President Trump’s White House ballroom construction project, while 33% support the project.

The poll also asked specific questions about the president’s handling of issues like immigration, foreign policy and the economy, resulting in the lowest approval ratings ever for Trump’s handling of the economy, his job as Commander in Chief of the U.S. military, and the Russia – Ukraine war in Quinnipiac University polls, officials said.

On immigration, 39% approve; 57% disapprove
As Commander in Chief: 36% approve; 60% disapprove
Foreign policy: 33% approve; 60% disapprove
The economy: 32% approve; 65% disapprove
War in Iran: 29% approve; 65% disapprove
Russia-Ukraine war: 28% approve; 61% disapprove
Trade with Canada: 28% approve; 62% disapprove

Out of the survey respondents, 32% of voters said they consider themselves supporters of Donald Trump’s Make America Great Again movement, while 65% said they do not. Among Republicans, 79% said they consider themselves MAGA supporters, while 17% do not, poll results show.

The poll was conducted with 970 self-identified registered voters nationwide, surveyed from Sept. 3-6, with a margin of error of +/- 3.9 percentage points, including the design effect.
