National chess team departs for African Championship in Botswana

Libya’s national chess team has departed to take part in the African Chess Championship in Botswana, with support from the Ministry of Sport.

The delegation is scheduled to transit through Cairo before continuing to Addis Ababa, and then on to Botswana, which is hosting the tournament with the participation of leading players and teams from across the continent.

The Libyan squad includes Mohamed Al-Souri, Youssef Al-Hassadi and international player Tawfiq Kuweiri, who will represent the country in the competition.

The delegation is headed by international arbiter Khaled Al-Shibli, a member of the executive office of the Libyan Chess Federation, alongside arbiter Fathi Al-Gaou, the federation’s deputy chairman.

Officials say the participation forms part of efforts by the Libyan Chess Federation to strengthen its presence at continental level and provide players with opportunities to compete internationally and gain experience.
