Morocco’s Port Traffic Rises 14.4% to 148.6 Million Tons by June 2026

Agadir – Morocco’s ports handled 148.6 million tons of trade traffic during the first half of 2026, up 14.4% from approximately 130 million tons recorded during the same period in 2025.

The increase was primarily driven by a strong rise in transshipment traffic, which reached 82.6 million tons, marking a 28.6% year-on-year increase.

National traffic meanwhile stood at 66 million tons, representing a marginal 0.6% increase compared with the first half of 2025.

Transshipment accounted for the largest share of total port activity at 55.6%, followed by imports at 27.4%, exports at 13.9%, cabotage at 2.6%, and bunkering at 0.6%.

Imports rise as exports and cabotage decline

During the first six months of 2026, Moroccan ports handled 40.7 million tons of imports, up 3.6% year-on-year.

Exports reached 20.6 million tons, down 1.6%, while cabotage fell 14.6% to 3.9 million tons.

Hydrocarbon bunkering also declined 4.1% to 868,000 tons, with the activity benefiting ships transiting the Strait of Gibraltar.

The evolution of strategic port traffic was mixed during the period.

Cereal traffic increased 13.8% to 5.8 million tons, while imported hydrocarbons rose 7.7% to 7.1 million tons. Container traffic grew 1.7%, reaching 6.3 million TEUs, while new vehicle traffic increased 12.9% to 357,634 units.

By contrast, traffic in phosphates and related products fell 11.2% to 14.6 million tons. Coal traffic declined 2.9% to 5.2 million tons, while international road transport dropped 3.2% to 301,191 units.

Passenger and cruise traffic

Passenger traffic through Moroccan ports reached 1.6 million passengers by the end of June, representing a slight 0.3% decrease compared with the same period a year earlier.

Cruise activity followed a more positive trend, with the number of cruise passengers rising 2.4% year-on-year to 174,366 passengers.

Meanwhile, landings of coastal and artisanal fishing products declined 6.3% during the first half of 2026, reaching 367,184 tons.
