Jorge Vilda: Morocco Has Overcome Semifinal Disappointment, Targeting Bronze Medal

Rabat – Morocco women’s national team coach Jorge Vilda said the Atlas Lionesses have largely overcome the disappointment of their semifinal elimination and are now focused on securing the bronze medal at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Speaking at a press conference in Rabat on Friday ahead of the third-place playoff against Algeria, Vilda said the team had gradually regained its mental balance after the painful semifinal defeat to Cameroon on penalties.

The Spanish coach acknowledged that Morocco’s failure to reach the final was decided by “small details,” adding that the penalty shootout was difficult for everyone involved with the national team.

However, Vilda stressed that his players have shown strong mental resilience and are determined to end their campaign with a victory.

“The players have great mental strength and a clear desire to finish the competition with a win,” Vilda said, emphasizing that Morocco’s overall run in the tournament has been positive.

The coach also recalled the team’s performances throughout the competition, noting that Morocco have played five matches while maintaining a competitive level and producing strong performances at different stages.

He added that the team’s statistics reflect the work the players have put in throughout the tournament, particularly in defensive terms.

Morocco now look to put the finishing touch on their WAFCON campaign by claiming third place on home soil.

Meanwhile, Moroccan defender Hanan Ait El Haj said the players remain committed to working collectively and supporting one another as they prepare for the decisive encounter.

She stressed that the Atlas Lionesses are determined to give their best against Algeria and deliver a performance worthy of the national team.

Morocco will face Algeria on Saturday at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. local time, with the bronze medal at stake.
