Morocco vs Algeria: A Derby to Finish with a Medal

This North African derby has a special significance – the winners will secure bronze, a place on the podium and end the continental showpiece on a high note.
There will inevitably be a sense of unfinished business. Just a day before the illustrious final that still seemed within reach, the two neighbours saw their title dreams dashed at the end of the semifinals. But before concluding a competition that has confirmed the progress of North African Women’s Football, both teams still have a medal to chase.
For the hosts Morocco, the goal is also to reward a particularly strong performance so far. The Atlas Lionesses gave the impression of controlling their tournament campaign for the most part before stumbling against Cameroon in the semifinals, in a match decided by a penalty shootout following a goalless draw that they lost 3-1 on penalties.
A disappointment that coach Jorge Vidal now wants to channel into energy. “We want to finish in the best possible way, with a victory,” he explained at a press conference.
The Spanish coach emphasized his team’s ability to bounce back after the frustration of the semifinal. “My players are very strong mentally. They want to finish the competition with a win,” he added, convinced that the work done over the past few months deserves to be rewarded with a medal.
A derby that promises excitement
Morocco is already familiar with Algeria. The two teams faced each other in the group stages with Morocco edging Algeria 1-0 and will meet again this time in a radically different context, with a bronze medal at stake. This matchup should further heighten the emotional intensity of this third-place game.
On the Moroccan side, the intention is clear – to offer a final victory to the fans who have supported the team throughout the tournament. “We are convinced that the players will give everything to finish with a medal, to please all our fans,” said Vidal.
For Algeria, they will approach this match with the same determination. For head coach Farid Benstiti, there is no question of letting this opportunity slip away after a historic run.
“We cannot relinquish this third place,” affirmed the Algerian coach. “We will respect the competition and give it our all.”
The Fennecs have already made history for their nation in this edition. Qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 was the reward for their stellar performance, but the team now wants to achieve even more. A bronze medal would represent the first tangible reward of a project built over several years.
“What will motivate us tomorrow is simply to make history for the Algerian women’s team,” explained Lina Boussaha. “Bringing a medal home to the people, this bronze medal, is no small thing.
A third place match, but a final nonetheless
Algeria also understand the symbolic significance of this match. Having progressed through the various stages of the competition, the players refuse to consider the third-place match as mere consolation.
“We are simply approaching this match as a final. It’s a third place match, but it’s a final. And we still have something to gain,” the midfielder insisted.
The Stat of the Day
This will be the first time two North African teams have faced each other in a medal match at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. Morocco is the second host country to participate in the third place match, after South Africa, which defeated Cameroon 2-0 in 2010.
