Morocco, Japan Move to Expand Bilateral Security Partnership

Agadir – Morocco and Japan have discussed ways to strengthen their security partnership and broaden cooperation on shared security challenges during high-level talks today in Rabat.

Abdellatif Hammouchi, Director General of National Security and National Territorial Surveillance, received Japan’s Ambassador to Morocco, Nakata Masahiro, for discussions focused on bilateral security cooperation.

The meeting reflects the two countries’ shared interest in developing their security partnership and expanding cooperation in areas that contribute to their respective security and stability.

The talks brought together discussions on several issues of mutual interest, with Hammouchi and Nakata exchanging views on regional and international developments affecting the security environment of both Morocco and Japan.

The two officials also expressed their commitment to further strengthening cooperation across different security-related fields.

The meeting comes within Morocco’s broader efforts to reinforce security and police partnerships with international counterparts, including countries considered friends and partners, as well as relevant international organizations.

The partnerships are aimed at strengthening coordination and promoting a common understanding of security threats, particularly those associated with terrorism and transnational organized crime.

Through such cooperation, Moroccan security authorities seek to enhance joint efforts to address evolving threats that increasingly extend beyond national borders.

The latest security discussions come as Morocco and Japan continue to expand cooperation across several strategic sectors.

Earlier this year, the two countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation on food security and ensuring a stable supply of phosphate fertilizers during talks in Tokyo between Japan’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ayano Kunimitsu, and Faris Derrij, CEO of OCP Nutricrops.

Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kunimitsu, during a meeting with Derrij, expressed Japan’s intention to further develop its “strategic and mutually beneficial relationship” with Morocco by expanding cooperation with OCP Group in the sector. 

The expanding cooperation across security, agriculture, fertilizers, and water management reflects the increasingly multifaceted nature of Morocco-Japan relations, with both countries seeking to build their partnership around areas of strategic and mutual interest.
