The South African led his Egyptian side to a commanding win at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi, with Walid El Karti opening the scoring in the fifth minute before Mahmoud Saber sealed the result four minutes into first-half added time.
Mokwena told the media after the match that he expected Gor Mahia counterpart Charles Akonnor to start with a different midfield setup, according to Pan-Africa Football.
Mokwena Surprised by Gor Mahia Selection
“I was surprised that Lesley started in midfield. I thought maybe Machaka would start as a number 10 with Alpha Onyango, with the physicality, very aggressive,” Mokwena said.
However, the former Al-Ittihad manager refused to go into detail, saying doing so would be disrespectful.
“They are a very good team and that is why they are the Kenyan champions. I don’t want to talk too much about tactics. I must respect the opposition coach and respect my team because there is still the second leg,” he added.
Mokwena Praises Pyramids Preparation
Mokwena praised the Egyptian Premier League side’s management, backroom staff and players for doing their homework on the Kenyan champions.
“Congratulations to everybody at the club. We worked very hard behind the scenes to find information and analyse the opposition. The staff and the players did a very good job,” he concluded.
