The African School Takes Over

Egyptian publication Youm7 highlighted a significant coaching change heading into the 2026/27 season, citing a club scene void of European coaches.

Instead, it pointed to the “African school” that will be occupying the touchline over the course of the campaign.

Leading this change is Al Ahly boss Hussein Ammouta, who succeeds Danish coach Jess Thorup, Mohamed Amine Benhachem, who took charge of Modern Sport Club, and Mokwena, who replaced Croatian coach Krunoslav Jurcic as Pyramids manager.

This revolution has been described by the publication as “an experience that reflects the confidence of Egyptian clubs in African coaching thought.”

Mokwena’s Attacking Philosophy

Youm7 singled out the South African for particular praise, highlighting his reputation as one of the continent’s most prominent coaches in recent years.

“Pyramids FC, for its part, is banking on South African Rulani Mokwena, one of the most prominent coaches on the African continent in recent years,” the publication stated.

“Mokwena is known for his attacking style, emphasizing possession and high pressing — a philosophy the club aims to implement to compete strongly for the league title and achieve a strong continental presence.”

A League Without European Coaches

The broader shift was also noted, with the publication pointing out the significance of the coaching landscape heading into the new campaign.

“With only three African coaches, the African school appears to have the most prominent presence in the Egyptian league this season, given the complete absence of European coaches from the competition,” Youm7 added.

Preparations Continue In Turkiye 

Mokwena will be looking to shape the squad in his image as the side prepares for the season ahead.

Pyramids are currently on a camp in Turkiye, where they will play their final friendly match as part of their preparation programme on Saturday, August 8, before returning to Cairo the following day.
