The story

Teboho Mokoena has added another accolade to his growing collection after being honoured with an Excellence Award by the Free State MEC.

The 29-year-old was recognised for his outstanding contributions at both club and international level at the recent Free State Provincial Sport Awards, celebrating his impact as one of the province’s leading sporting figures.

Mokoena shared his appreciation on Instagram after receiving the award, posting snapshots from the ceremony showing him accepting a certificate and trophy while dressed sharply in a navy suit and glossy black loafers.

“Honoured to receive an Excellence Award from the Free State MEC. Grateful for where I come from and excited for what’s still ahead,” Mokoena wrote.

The recognition comes after another memorable period in the midfielder’s career, with Mokoena continuing to establish himself as one of South Africa’s most influential players. 

His importance to Bafana Bafana was particularly evident during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he played a key role in the team’s historic campaign. Mokoena scored the equaliser in the 1-1 draw against Czechia in South Africa’s second group-stage match.

His consistent performances for club and country have also earned him a special place in the hearts of supporters, with fans affectionately referring to him as “Player ya Sechaba.”

At Masandawana, Mokoena has likewise been central to the club’s success. The midfielder played an important role in the Brazilians’ CAF Champions League triumph last season, famously finding the net in the second leg against AS FAR.

From representing his province with distinction to delivering on some of the biggest stages in African and international football, Mokoena’s latest honour serves as another recognition of the journey he has taken, while his message suggests he is far from finished.
