Michael Nkambule Dies Aged 37

The South African football fraternity has been plunged into mourning following the passing of former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Michael Nkambule at the age of 37.

Nkambule, who came through the amateur ranks with Etwatwa-based side Brazil before earning a place in the Kaizer Chiefs development structures, lost his life on Friday after succumbing to injuries sustained in a car accident.

A talented midfielder from Etwatwa in Daveyton, Nkambule’s football journey also took him abroad to French club Strasbourg.

Although he did not break into the first team, the move marked a significant milestone in his career before he returned home to continue playing professionally.

Over the years, he also turned out for clubs including SuperSport United and Black Leopards, earning admiration for his technical ability and commitment to the game.

Family friend and spokesperson Siyabonga Moloi confirmed the heartbreaking news to Soccer Laduma, revealing that Nkambule had been fighting for his life in hospital after a serious accident approximately two weeks ago.

“Michael was involved in a car accident about two weeks ago. The vehicle he was driving overturned and he was alone at the time,” Moloi said.

“He was initially rushed to Far East Rand Hospital before being transferred to Johannesburg Gen Hospital, where he underwent surgery for spinal cord injuries. The operation was successful, and he was later transferred back to Far East Rand Hospital. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries this afternoon (Friday).”

Moloi said he received the devastating news from Nkambule’s younger brother and had remained in constant contact with the family throughout the former midfielder’s hospitalisation.

“His younger brother, who is also a friend of mine, called me with the sad news. We’ve been communicating since Michael was admitted to hospital, and he kept me updated on his condition.”

Away from professional football, Nkambule remained deeply involved in the game. He regularly featured in legends matches as a respected member of Ditlhake Masters, a team comprising former professional footballers, including several ex-Bafana Bafana players.

Moloi added that the loss was especially painful on a personal level, as the pair co-owned a football club in Etwatwa and shared a passion for developing young talent in their community.

“Michael and I co-owned a football club in Etwatwa, so this is devastating for me. I’m speaking to you from his family home, where relatives have gathered. The family is expected to decide on the funeral arrangements over the weekend.”

The passing of Nkambule has left a void among those who knew him both on and off the pitch, with former teammates, friends and members of the football community expected to pay tribute to a player whose love for the game never faded after his professional career.
