On August 1, the Italian Government implemented a 30-day border control change for travelers arriving from Spain. The Italian Interior Ministry has begun discretionary spot checks at major airports, and is not checking every traveler. U.S. citizen travelers should be prepared for potential screening, document checks, and delays at airports and sea crossings when arriving in Italy from Spain. If documents are requested, travelers should be prepared to present proof of identity, a visa or proof of residence, or U.S. passport indicating the right to be in the Schengen area.
