Mbokazi blow for Bafana after being ruled out for rest of MLS season

Bafana Bafana defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi will miss the remainder of the 2026 Major League Soccer season after suffering a thigh tear, Chicago Fire FC head coach Gregg Berhalter has confirmed.

The injury comes as a setback for South Africa, with the 20-year-old having established himself as one of the national team’s most important defenders during their historic FIFA World Cup campaign.

Mbokazi played every minute as Bafana reached the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time, delivering a series of mature performances that enhanced his growing reputation.

The former Orlando Pirates academy graduate sustained the injury shortly after returning to club duty following the tournament.

Berhalter confirmed the extent of the setback ahead of Chicago Fire’s Leagues Cup encounter against Necaxa, revealing that Mbokazi would not feature again this season.

“Mbo being out for the year is a tough one,” Berhalter told Apple TV.

“It’s really about the next person stepping up and being a team that’s hard to score on. Closing the spaces, being compact.”

The injury ends what has been a remarkable debut season in MLS for Mbokazi.

The centre back immediately adapted to life in the United States, starting all 12 of his regular-season appearances and became a key figure in Chicago Fire’s defensive structure.

His performances were recognised by supporters, with Mbokazi receiving the most fan votes for the 2026 MLS All-Star Game before the injury ruled him out of the event.

For Bafana Bafana, the timing of the injury will be a concern as the national team prepares for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Mbokazi’s emergence has provided South Africa with much-needed stability at centre back, particularly after he formed part of a defence that helped the team compete against some of the world’s best nations at the World Cup.

His absence will now the successor of Hugo Broos with a decision to make as Bafana begin preparations for another important qualification campaign.

However, the focus will be on Mbokazi’s recovery rather than the setback itself.

At just 20 years old, the defender has already demonstrated his ability to perform at the highest level, and his performances in 2026 have positioned him as one of South Africa’s most exciting young players.

Chicago Fire will now have to find a solution without one of their standout performers, while Bafana will hope Mbokazi can return stronger and continue his rapid rise on the international stage.
