Lone Kaizer Chiefs star included in Pitso Mosimane’s first Bafana Bafana squad

New Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane has named his preliminary squad for this month’s 2027 AFCON qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea, as well as next month’s international friendly against Egypt.

Notably, only one Kaizer Chiefs player was included in the selection.

Mosimane will officially begin his second tenure on Saturday, September 26, with a home match against Guinea, for which the venue is yet to be announced by SAFA. Four days later, the team will play away against Eritrea at a reported neutral venue in Egypt.

Following the clash with Eritrea, Bafana will face the Pharaohs in an international friendly at the Cairo International Stadium on October 4.

Speaking at his official unveiling at SAFA House on Tuesday, Mosimane stressed that he will field the core of predecessor Hugo Broos’ side for the qualifiers. However, he plans to provide opportunities to fringe players and newcomers during the friendly match against Egypt.

Mosimane’s preliminary squad, announced on Friday night, reflects this approach, featuring a large contingent of familiar faces alongside several newcomers. The goalkeeping unit remains unchanged, with regulars Ronwen Williams, Sipho Chaine, and Ricardo Goss retaining their spots.

In defence, the notable inclusions are Tshepo Mashiloane and current Betway Premiership Defender of the Season Lebone Seema. Additionally, Thapelo Morena returns to the setup after missing the World Cup; he is expected to replace the injured Khuliso Mudau.

Mosimane has also opted for his tried-and-tested options in midfield. Lebohang Maboe, the lone Chiefs representative in the squad, is expected to make the final selection, replacing the injured Thalente Mbatha.

Bafana’s attacking unit appears sharp. Beyond the usual core, Puso Dithejane and Cassius Mailula have been rewarded following their impressive form for Chicago Fire and Mamelodi Sundowns, respectively. Luther Singh and Shandre Campbell were also included.

Mosimane is expected to announce his final squad in the coming days, with just over three weeks remaining before the home match against Guinea.
