Mali army fighting new battles near capital: residents

BAMAKO: Fighting broke out Sunday in Kati, the stronghold of Mali’s ruling junta near the capital Bamako, a day after rebels and jihadists staged synchronized attacks nationwide, residents said.
One resident said fighting had resumed “everywhere” in the garrison town and that the “jihadists are on a hill” above Kati. Another resident said planes were flying over the town.
