Malawi and Cameroon chase first WAFCON title in Rabat

Malawi and Cameroon will meet at Rabat’s Moulay El Hassan Stadium at 9 p.m. Sunday, August 16, with both seeking their first Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title, the Confederation of African Football said.

Malawi reached the final in its tournament debut, becoming the first newcomer to do so since the inaugural competition in 1998. The Scorchers have scored a tournament-high 12 goals, including nine from sisters Temwa and Tabitha Chawinga.

Cameroon brings greater experience and a stronger defensive record, conceding twice and scoring five times. Goalkeeper Michaely Bihina made nine saves as Cameroon eliminated 10-time champion Nigeria 1-0, then stopped three penalties in the semifinal shootout against host Morocco.

Cameroon is playing its fourth final after defeats in 2004, 2014 and 2016. The winner will become only the fourth country to lift the title and will receive $2 million.
