Lloyd’s Register (LR) is providing classification and technical assurance to Dixstone Lower Gulf FZCO for the conversion of an LNG carrier into a floating storage unit (FSU) for deployment offshore Gabon, according to a recent LR press release.
The LNG Bayelsa, now under the temporary name FSU LNG Cap Lopez, is undergoing conversion at Drydocks World Dubai.
In its new role, it will support liquefaction, storage and export from a near-shore barge, also helping to reduce routine gas flaring. The wider project should increase Gabon’s gas production capacity by about 105 MMcf/d.
The conversion includes extensive steel works, new piping systems, installation of a boil-off gas module, tank coating and other life-extension measures.
Dixstone is a sister company to Perenco.
LR’s role covers the full conversion/life-extension scope, performing classification, plan approval, survey and technical oversight to ensure all modifications comply with safety, structural and regulatory requirements.
It is also working with Dixstone and the shipyard to assure the integrity and long-term operability of the vessel in its new role.
“The FSU LNG Cap Lopez conversion reflects increasing momentum behind LNG carrier conversions and floating storage solutions as operators seek flexible, lower-impact ways to develop gas resources,” said Sean Van der Post, LR’s global offshore business director. “Independent technical assurance and robust life-extension strategies are essential as assets are adapted to new operating profiles and environments.”
Svanehoj has a contract with Drydocks World Dubai to supply LTD gauging systems for the same project. The marine pumps specialist is supplying four LTD gauging systems to replace the existing float-type level gauges.
The upgrades should enable automatic, continuous measurement of LNG density and gas composition in storage tanks.
Real-time data will be routed to rollover prediction software, designed to detect stratification and identify potential rollover events before they occur.
