Lloyd’s Register supports LNG carrier conversion for Gabon offshore gas project

Lloyd’s Register (LR) is providing classification and technical assurance for the conversion of an LNG carrier into a floating storage unit (FSU) for an offshore gas project in Gabon.

The former LNG carrier LNG Bayelsa is being converted at Drydocks World Dubai.

The vessel is currently named FSU LNG Cap Lopez. Once completed, it will provide LNG storage for the Cap Lopez project in Gabon.

LNG carrier converted into floating storage unit

The FSU will support the liquefaction, storage and export of LNG from a near-shore barge.

The project is also designed to help reduce routine gas flaring and improve energy efficiency.

The conversion includes extensive steel works and new piping systems. A boil-off gas module will also be installed.

In addition, the vessel will undergo several life-extension measures to prepare it for its new operating role.

LR noted that LNG carrier conversions can provide a faster and more cost-effective option than building new floating units, particularly for offshore gas developments.

LR provides technical oversight

LR’s role covers the full conversion and life-extension programme.

The classification society is providing plan approval, surveys and technical oversight. It will also verify that modifications meet relevant safety, structural and regulatory requirements.

LR is working with Dixstone Lower Gulf FZCO, a sister company of Perenco, and the shipyard during the conversion.

“The FSU LNG Cap Lopez conversion reflects increasing momentum behind LNG carrier conversions and floating storage solutions as operators seek flexible, lower-impact ways to develop gas resources,” said Sean Van der Post, Global Offshore Business Director at Lloyd’s Register.

FSU to support Cap Lopez gas development

The converted vessel will form part of the broader Cap Lopez project.

Michel Gotab, Managing Director of Dixstone Lower Gulf, described the development as a new gas backbone for Gabon.

He said the project will help maximise the country’s natural gas resources for both domestic use and exports.

The FSU LNG Cap Lopez will serve as the project’s LNG storage facility, supporting the wider gas infrastructure being developed for Perenco and Gabon.
