Libyan rights group calls for ICC probe into east-based Kweifiya prison abuses

The National Institution for Human Rights in Libya (NIHRL) has called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor to investigate alleged serious and systematic abuses at Kweifiya Prison in Benghazi.

The group said it had documented the detention of 106 people between 2024 and 2026, including religious figures and followers of Sufi orders. It highlighted cases of enforced disappearance, torture, ill-treatment and denial of medical care.

According to the NIHRL, six detainees had died as a result of medical negligence and another 10 had died following torture.

The group accused several security and military formations affiliated with the eastern authorities and Haftar’s forces of involvement, allegations that have not been independently verified.

The organisation said it had previously asked Libyan judicial, security and military authorities to investigate the alleged abuses, and is now seeking an ICC investigation and accountability for those responsible.
